MANILA — Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala returned to Manila Sunday to a warm reception following her historic run at Wimbledon (Great Britain), where she became the first Philippine singles player to reach the Round of 16 in the tournament’s storied history.

as Eala arrived from London, celebrating a milestone that has inspired a new generation of Filipino tennis players.
Officials from the Philippine Tennis Association, Philippine Sports Commission, and
Philippine Olympic Committee joined young athletes and fans in welcoming the country’s tennis star back home.
Eala’s Wimbledon campaign captured national and international attention as she battled through the early rounds and reached the fourth round of the prestigious Grand Slam event.
Her achievement eclipsed previous records set by Filipino players in singles competition and underscored the rapid progress of Philippine tennis on the international stage.
The 21-year-old’s breakthrough season has included strong performances on the professional circuit, helping her climb the world rankings and establish herself as one of the sport’s emerging talents.
Sports officials have described her Wimbledon accomplishment as a significant moment for Philippine tennis, saying it could encourage greater grassroots participation and investment in the sport.
Fans will have another opportunity to celebrate Eala’s achievement during a scheduled meet-and-greet at the Glorietta Activity Center on Wednesday, where she is expected to share her experiences from Wimbledon and interact with supporters.
Eala’s homecoming is also notable because it is her first extended stay in the Philippines since competing in the inaugural Philippine Women’s Open earlier this year, a special occasion for local tennis fans eager to welcome home one of the country’s most accomplished athletes.
Alex currently holds the No. 32 spot in the official Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings. Following a historic fourth-round run at Wimbledon, she reached a career-high of World No. 28 in the live rankings.
