MANILA, Philippines — Cavite Rep. Francisco Barzaga may face expulsion from Congress as calls grow over his alleged repeated misconduct.
Deputy Speaker Janette Garin said Tuesday that Barzaga’s actions—ranging from controversial social media posts to disruptive behavior—remain unchanged despite prior sanctions. The neophyte lawmaker has already been suspended twice for 60 days.
Barzaga has defended his remarks, including accusations that fellow lawmakers accepted bribes and criticisms labeling the House as ineffective. These statements have drawn backlash from colleagues who say they damage the chamber’s credibility.
Garin noted that repeated violations in Congress often lead to harsher penalties, potentially culminating in expulsion. She also cited Barzaga’s absence from ethics hearings and conduct during proceedings as grounds for concern.
While an ethics panel has reportedly recommended his removal, the decision still requires approval from House leaders. Officials have not confirmed the outcome, maintaining that proceedings are confidential.
