MANILA — Nancy Catamco, a former governor of Cotabato and current commissioner of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), has reportedly been named the agency’s new chairperson, according to a circulating social media post.
Known for her advocacy on behalf of indigenous peoples, Catamco has built her career around public service and engagement with indigenous communities.
During her tenure as Cotabato governor and as representative of the province’s 2nd District, she supported policies aimed at strengthening the protection and development of indigenous cultural communities.
The NCIP is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including recognising ancestral lands, supporting self-determination, and preserving cultural heritage. Analysts say her experience could further enhance the commission’s mandate.
An official announcement from Malacañang has not yet been issued as of press time.
