MANILA — The Grand Line just got a touch of Filipino pride. Filipino-American actress Julia Rehwald has joined Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the beloved anime One Piece, playing the determined Marine swordswoman Tashigi in the upcoming second season.
In a recent Vogue Philippines interview, Rehwald said, “There’s a Filipino in One Piece now.” The statement quickly resonated with fans, many of whom celebrated the Filipino presence in a franchise that has captivated millions worldwide.
Rehwald’s journey to the role reflects both talent and perseverance. Growing up in the U.S. as the child of Filipino parents, she often encountered a lack of representation in mainstream media. “Being part of One Piece is surreal,” she admitted. “It’s a story that’s inspired so many, and now I get to inhabit one of its iconic characters while proudly representing my heritage.”
Fans have already praised her portrayal of Tashigi, highlighting her swordsmanship, courage, and nuanced performance. With Rehwald joining the global cast, the series not only continues to expand its epic adventures but also signals the growing visibility of Filipino artists on the world stage.
“Representation isn’t just important—it’s empowering,” Rehwald said. “I hope this opens doors for more Filipinos to see themselves in stories that reach across the globe.”
