SANTA MARIA, BULACAN — Relief assistance brought more than immediate support to families affected by persistent rains in Barangay Bagbaguin here. It also carried a message that government services should reach communities where help is most needed.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian personally led the distribution of assistance to affected residents, joined by local officials and community leaders.
Among those present were Buacan Sixth District Congressman Ador Pleyto, Mayor Omeng Ramos, and Bulacan Vice Governor Alex Castro, who took part in the coordinated effort to bring government assistance closer to affected families by relentless rains.
The activity was facilitated through the DSWD, with Weng Joson among those involved in the relief operation.
For the families who received the relief packages, the assistance was more than just a box of supplies. It provided some relief to households struggling to cope with the additional burden brought by the rains and flooding.
The activity also underscored an important principle in public service: government response should not remain confined to offices and official statements. It should be felt directly in the communities.
Public officials can make promises and issue statements, but their presence during times of crisis remains one of the clearest measures of public service.
That was the picture in Bagbaguin, where national and local officials worked together to deliver assistance to residents.
Secretary Gatchalian’s presence gave the relief effort a more direct government response to the needs of affected families. While a single round of assistance cannot erase the difficulties confronting a household, it can provide meaningful support to families trying to get through their daily needs.
Local officials also played a key role in coordinating the response and ensuring that affected residents were connected to available national government programs.
Congressman Pleyto represented the district in the relief effort, while Mayor Ramos helped coordinate the local government’s response. Vice Governor Castro likewise joined the initiative, highlighting the importance of cooperation among different levels of government.
Public service, after all, should not be treated as a competition over who gets credit for assisting.
What matters most is that help reaches the people who need it.
In Bagbaguin, under the leadership of Barangay Captain Andy Tique, the joint effort of national and local authorities demonstrated how coordinated action can help speed up the delivery of assistance to ordinary families.

The distribution of relief packages brought visible relief and happiness to many recipients.
According to the figures cited during the activity, 502 residents in Santa Maria were affected, while more than 9,000 people across Bulacan were reportedly evacuated and assisted by the government amid the continuing weather disturbance.
The arrival of government officials and the distribution of assistance may be a welcome step, but the bigger challenge remains: ensuring that support continues for communities still recovering from the effects of the rains.
