MANILA, Philippines — Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga’s removal from the House of Representatives has sparked debate over what lies ahead for the longtime Cavite politician.
The House voted overwhelmingly to expel Barzaga after an ethics investigation concluded that he repeatedly breached parliamentary rules and engaged in conduct deemed unacceptable for a sitting lawmaker.
The decision stripped him of his congressional post effective immediately, leaving Cavite’s 4th District without representation in the lower chamber.
Attention is now turning to the next steps for both the district and Barzaga himself. Authorities must first address the vacancy created by the expulsion and determine whether a special election is warranted.
Legal analysts note, however, that House expulsion does not automatically prevent an individual from seeking elective office again. The sanction removes a lawmaker from membership in the chamber but does not carry the same legal consequences as a court-imposed disqualification.
As a result, Barzaga remains eligible to run for public office unless a separate ruling bars him from doing so.
The controversy is expected to resonate strongly in Cavite politics, where supporters and critics alike are likely to frame the expulsion as a defining issue in future campaigns.
Although his congressional term has been cut short, Barzaga could still find his way back onto the ballot in the years ahead.
