MANILA – A recent survey indicating that 88 percent of Filipinos favor a Senate impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte has fueled renewed calls from lawmakers for her to face the allegations directly.
Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V said Friday that the Tangere poll highlights strong public interest in accountability, noting that Filipinos are increasingly demanding a formal process where the Vice President can respond to accusations.
He said the results show that the issue is no longer limited to political groups but reflects a broader public expectation for transparency.
The survey, conducted April 22–23, revealed that most respondents believe the Senate trial should serve as a platform for explanation rather than punishment. Around 70 percent said Duterte should personally testify, while 51 percent want her to clarify financial issues with supporting evidence.
Ortega said the findings weaken claims that the impeachment case is political persecution and instead point to a public push for clarity and accountability.
House Public Accounts Chair Terry Ridon said the survey sends a clear message that the public wants direct answers in a formal setting.
